About the Artist

Al Sprague (1938-2025)
Early Life & Artistic Roots
- Panama Origins: Born in Colón, Panama, and raised in the Panama Canal Zone by American parents, Sprague developed a deep reverence for his surroundings through his family's values. His father, Howard Sprague, held a profound affection for Panama and taught his children to treasure the heart of the nation—its people, traditions, and vibrant culture. Guided by this perspective, Sprague cultivated a lifelong respect for his birthplace, enabling him to connect with the true essence of Panama and authentically capture its people through his artwork.
- Academic Foundation: He moved to the United States for formal training, earning his Bachelor of Arts (1962) and Master of Arts (1965) from American University in Washington, D.C.
- Return to Panama: Returning to Panama in 1967, Sprague dedicated himself to art education—teaching at Curundu Junior High, Balboa High School, and Panama Canal College—while building a vast portfolio celebrating the nation. In the early 1980s Sprague dedicated his career to painting the people of Panama.
